Shading and sketches

Shading and sketches

Shading with different types of pencils and charcoal to achieve different gradients by shading. Other methods to form gradients include cross-hatching and stippling.

Chair challenge

Drawing a chair without looking at my paper. I chose this picture as it's the only one that I did that vaguely resembles a chair...
I think this challenge helped me to realise that it's okay to do quick sketches and that not every drawing has to look perfectly pristine.

Drawing the same chair with a charcoal pencil, this time while looking at my paper, with the intent of focusing on shading, shadows and light. The difference between this drawing and the one above helps to highlight how some simple shading can really make a drawing look far more realistic and complete.

Here's another example of shading that helps to make a 2D drawing look slightly more 3D by helping to contrast highlights and the shadows of the sphere.
